• The transcriptional activity of LjbHLH7 was suppressed by the interaction with the L. japonicus JASMONATE-ZIM DOMAIN protein LjJAZ4.
• A JAZ protein, LjJAZ4, was also isolated that can interact with LjbHLH7 and reduce its transcriptional activation capacity.
• We infer that JA signaling may regulate LjbHLH7 through LjJAZ4, thereby regulating the expression of CNglc synthase genes in L. japonicus.
• We propose that LjbHLH7 acts as an activator and LjJAZ4 acts as a repressor of JA-induced regulation of CNglc biosynthesis in L. japonicus.
